Financial Aid

Sources of Financial Assistance

When a family with financial need has the desire of sending its child(ren) to Catholic school, and a willingness to participate in a school and parish life is present, there are several forms of financial aid available:

- St. Joseph Elementary School Tuition Assistance

SJES tuition assistance is administered from the SJES business office and the funds come from the school’s own sources including gifts, donations, and fundraising efforts. The 1st round of tuition assistance grants is processed in April and awarded in June, prior to the upcoming school year. Applications are available online through FACTs Grant & Aid (

- Family Aid for Catholic Education (FACE)

FACE is funded and administered by the Catholic Diocese of Oakland. The funds come from contributions and gifts solicited by Catholic organizations for support of Catholic school students in the Diocese of Oakland. Applications are available online through FACTS Management Grant and Aid starting January 1. Deadline for applications is April 30. Grant results are forwarded to the school in early June.

- Bay Area Scholarships for Innercity Children (BASIC)

The BASIC Fund is a privately funded program whose mission is to broaden the educational opportunities for inner-city children by helping low-income families afford the cost of tuition at private schools in the Bay Area. The application deadline is mid-April but late applications may be accepted based on family circumstances. For the application and more information on the BASIC fund, please visit their website:

Please contact the school office with any questions you may have. Although most of the budgeted assistance is granted in April, we encourage families that encounter financial difficulties during the school year to contact the SJES office.

Should a family transfer to a school outside of the Diocesan system, future payments are forfeited. Families never receive a direct cash payment from FACE, BASIC Fund and/or other scholarship/grant programs.
