Welcome to St. Joseph Upper Elementary School in Alameda, CA. 6th grade students at St. Joseph spend this year becoming Middle School students. Most of the skills needed to succeed in middle school. 7th grade students continue developing their reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary skills. 8th grade students are preparing themselves to meeting the challenges of high school, whether it be addressing on-demand prompts that prepare them for freshman placement exams or analysis of fiction and non-fiction. As you can see, all students, therefore, need to work hard to learn and understand the expectations of what is to come in their future educational settings.
All of the expectations are in the course syllabus document that you will find at each website grade level. Curriculum is aligned to the Common Core in the areas of grammar, vocabulary development, fiction such as short stories, poetry, novels, and non-fiction articles and essays. Writing includes expository, argumentative, compare-contrast, literary analysis, as well as creative writing such as poetry, short stories, and journal responses. The Wordly Wise program, aligned to Common Core standards, is in place at each grade level that seamlessly progresses students to the next grade level.
