Texts/Materials include: Blest Are We, New American Bible , and Family Life
The Beatitudes and the Ten Commandments are emphasized in the curriculum this year. Fourth graders study the texts as well as the Bible; the importance of prayer, liturgy, social justice, and moral values are woven throughout the year.
In Reading, we explore a number of chapter books. Some are enjoyed as a whole class, some are read independently. Fiction and non-fiction books as well as those representing a wide range of genres are included. Included in the curriculum are comprehension skills, grammar skills, knowledge of vocabulary, and a variety of writing experiences (structured paragraphs, expository writing, and poetry, for example) are included.
Math Text: McGraw-Hill Mathematics
Much attention is given to the "basic" operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Word problems and critical thinking skills are strengthened; students learn to identify and understand the "why" as well as the "how." Subject matter may also include work with fractions, decimals, and geometry.
Social Studies Text: Our Golden State
Fourth Grade is traditionally all about California! We will study the first Californians, early settlers, immigrants, the missions, Gold Rush, transportation, key figures in California history, geography, and map skills. Highlights of the year include our "Mission Project," based on individual family trips to their mission of choice, and a class trip to Sacramento, usually via AMTRAK.
