This year in 8th grade science, students will be learning about the formation of the solar system and Milky Way galaxy and how we know what we know through space exploration. They will also dive deep into geologic time and how the age of Earth is determined. A large part of the curriculum this year will address the different ways that humans have influenced Earth and its processes. We will take a close look at the meaning of sustainability and how it is being applied to natural resource consumption, especially water and fossil fuels. We'll also explore how changing climate is affecting Earth's oceans. We'll learn how humans influence genetics as we review some basic ideas in genetics and then launch into deeper topics including mutations, artificial selection, selective breeding, GMOs, cloning, and de-extinction. We'll also learn about the physical laws of nature as we explore how motion and forces affect us in our daily lives. Eight graders will also be paticipating in science fair week and the school science fair.
