Principal’s Newsletter: February 16th, 2012

16 February 2012

Dear St. Joseph Families:

Greetings!  Congratulations to sixth grader, Beatrice, who won first prize in the CTN Catholic Schools Week essay contest.  Her essay, Cherishing the Gift of Words, was one of over 1500 entries, and will be published on the front page of the CTN newsletter.  Beatrice was awarded an ipod nano, and the school received an elmo document camera.  Congratulations also go to Ms Wadsworth, who guided all our sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in writing their essays.

Congratulations to seventh graders Lea, Samantha, and Mary Carmen, and to eighth graders John, Rebecca, and Elsbeth.  These students will represent our school at the Oakland Diocese Science Fair at SJND on Saturday, February 25th. The gym will be open to the public between 12:30 and 2:00 pm that day, if you’d like to see the work these students did as well as see projects from around the diocese.  Many thanks to our science teacher, Ms Beckham, for all her time and work in helping all our students with their science fair projects.

Thanks to Mrs. Carlson and Mrs. Manning for their work and dedication on making this year’s book fair a hugely successful event.  Sales during Catholic Schools Week totaled $7354.73. Thanks to all our families who supported the book fair.  All proceeds go to the school library.

Congratulations to Ann Wong, our seventh grade teacher.  Mrs. Wong’s youngest daughter, Keely, recently earned her nursing degree and passed the board exams.  Mrs. Wong now has a nurse and two doctors among her three daughters, all of whom are graduates of St. Joseph Elementary School.

Applications for tuition assistance for the 2012 – 2013 school year are now available at the front office.  Applications are due back by March 9th.

Words are often the source of misunderstanding.

One sees clearly only with the heart.  Anything essential is invisible to the eye.

Saint Exupery

Please pray for Jordan, cousin to 7th grader, Madison; for Linda Morales; for Deven, a young man recently diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma; for Mrs. Sonido; for the family of Kindergartner Jack H; for the family of 5th grader, Leila; for the family of 5th grader Michaela; for the sick, especially those in our own parish; for those in countries who are at war; for all our own intentions; for peace in our world.

Peace,

Monica O’Callaghan
