All middle school students in grades 6-8 participate in a project-based learning course which we call "Electives." This class is held once per week for 50 minutes. The goal of this class is to promote self-guided project-based learning within a supportive small group environment. There are 4-6 teacher advisors assigned per grade level for this class. Each advisor will oversee 5-8 students per grade level.
Each trimester, the students submit a project proposal that interests them, and after the proposal is approved they work on their independent study with their advisor's support. At the end of a trimester, students will create a culminating project (PowerPoint presentation, essay, poster board, artwork, teach a lesson, etc.) that showcases their learning about their topic.
